The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Ten-year-old Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, he'd practice pitching in his backyard, dreaming of becoming a professional player one day. His golden hair would fly in the wind as he threw his favorite ball again and again.
One sunny afternoon, Leo's baseball sailed over the fence into the mysterious garden behind old Mrs. Castillo's house. He carefully climbed through the bushes to retrieve it.
That's when he saw him — a little zombie boy about Leo's age, with messy green hair and the kindest eyes Leo had ever seen. The zombie boy was hiding behind a papaya tree, looking sad and lonely.
Leo wasn't scared. "Hello there," he said softly. "I'm Leo. What's your name?"
The zombie boy made a soft grunting sound and pointed to a patch of wild papayas growing on the tree.
"Papaya?" Leo asked, pulling one from the tree. "You want a papaya?"
The zombie boy's face lit up like sunshine. Leo carefully peeled the sweet orange fruit and handed it to his new friend. The zombie boy took a small bite and did a happy little dance, his green hair bouncing with every step.
Suddenly, Leo understood. This wasn't a scary zombie at all. This was just a lonely magical creature who loved sweet papayas and needed a friend.
From that day on, Leo brought papayas to the garden every afternoon. Sometimes he'd even practice his baseball pitching while the zombie boy watched and clapped his hands with joy. They became the best of friends, even though they couldn't speak the same language.
Leo learned that sometimes the things that seem scary at first can turn out to be the best friends of all. All you need is an open heart — and maybe a sweet papaya to share.
