The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Lily discovered the pyramid behind her house on a Tuesday morning. It wasn't big — just tall enough for a ten-year-old to stand inside — and it sparkled like someone had sprinkled diamond dust all over it. The strangest part? It hadn't been there yesterday.
Inside, the air smelled sweet, like sunshine and fruit. Lily's iphone flashlight revealed walls covered in glowing drawings. And there, sitting cross-legged on a pyramid-shaped stone, was the most surprising thing of all.
A zombie.
But this wasn't like the scary ones in movies. This zombie had kind eyes and wore a flower crown made of orange blossoms. He held a bright orange papaya in his greenish hands.
"Hello," said Lily, surprised that she wasn't afraid.
"Hello," the zombie replied. His voice sounded like wind through palm trees. "Would you like some papaya? It's magical. It grows only here, inside the Time Pyramid."
Lily tried it. It tasted like sunshine and friendship and everything wonderful.
"My name is Zane," said the zombie. "I've been waiting for someone to find this place for three hundred years. I was cursed by a lonely wizard who wanted company but forgot about me. But I don't mind anymore. The papayas keep me happy, and sometimes I go swimming in the secret river that flows beneath this pyramid."
"You can leave?" Lily asked.
"Only at night, when the moon is full. Tonight is such a night. Would you like to come swimming with me?"
The underground river was warmer than bathwater and glowed with tiny lights. Zane taught Lily to swim properly, something she'd been too afraid to try at regular swimming lessons.
"You're very brave," Zane said. "Not everyone would make friends with a zombie."
"You're not scary," Lily said. "You're just lonely."
Zane smiled. "Friendship is the strongest magic. It breaks more curses than any spell."
They met every full moon after that. Lily became an excellent swimmer, and Zane finally had someone to share his magical papayas with. He even learned to use Lily's iphone to video call his sister, who had been waiting for him for three hundred years.
The pyramid remained in Lily's backyard, a secret door to magic and friendship. And sometimes, when adults weren't looking, other children would glimpse a gentle figure with green skin and a flower crown, offering magical papayas to anyone brave enough to see beyond appearances.
Because the best adventures aren't the ones you expect. They're the ones where you discover that friends come in all shapes, sizes, and shades of green.
