The Zombie Who Loved Papayas

Lily's backyard wasn't ordinary. Her swimming pool sparkled like liquid sapphires under the summer sun, but something strange happened whenever she swam at twilight.

One evening, as Lily dipped her toes into the cool water, she noticed green vines curling around the pool's edge. Then, a hand—pale and slightly wobbly—poked up from the gardenias. A zombie! But this zombie wore flower crowns and carried a basket of papayas.

"Don't be scared," the zombie said, his voice like rustling leaves. "I'm Zed, and I'm a GARDEN zombie, not a scary one. I grow magical papayas that bring wilting flowers back to life!"

Lily's eyes widened. "You mean...you help things grow?"

Zed nodded, his smile surprisingly gentle. "Every full moon, I plant papaya seeds around pools everywhere. The moonlight turns them into magic fruit that can heal any dying plant. But I need a human friend to help me spread the magic."

He held out a sun-ripened papaya. Its orange flesh glowed softly.

"Take a bite," Zed whispered. "And make a wish for something you want to grow."

Lily took a bite—sweet and tropical like sunshine itself. She wished her grandmother's rose bush, which hadn't bloomed since Grandpa passed away, would flower again.

Together, Lily and Zed planted papaya seeds around the pool. As moonlight danced on the water, tiny sprouts emerged immediately, shimmering with stardust.

The next morning, Grandma's rose bush burst with crimson blooms. And everywhere Zed had planted his magic seeds, flowers and vegetables thrived.

"The world needs more magic," Zed said, adjusting his flower crown. "Not everyone who looks different is scary. Sometimes, they're just gardeners in disguise."

From then on, whenever Lily swam at twilight, Zed appeared with his papaya basket. They became the best of friends, teaching everyone that the strangest creatures can have the biggest hearts—and that a little bit of magic (and friendship) can make anything bloom.
