The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Lila was playing in her grandmother's garden when she saw something strange. A lumpy figure walked slowly between the fruit trees. Its wild green **hair** stuck up like messy grass, and its arms swung loosely at its sides.
"Is that a **zombie**?" Lila whispered, hiding behind the big banana leaves. She had heard stories about zombies, but she thought they were only in scary movies.
The zombie stopped at the papaya tree and reached up with gentle fingers. It plucked a ripe orange **papaya** and held it like a treasure. Then it turned toward Lila's house.
"Hello?" Lila called out, stepping from her hiding spot. The zombie froze.
Its name was Zumi, and it wasn't scary at all. Zumi explained (in a slow, dreamy voice) that they were a "garden guardian" — someone who loved plants so much that they sometimes forgot everything else, even their own name. That's why they walked like a zombie! Zumi had been traveling between gardens for years, leaving perfect papayas wherever they went. But they had never had a **friend** before.
Every day that summer, Lila helped Zumi in the garden. They planted sunflowers, watered the vegetables, and of course, grew the most delicious papayas in the whole world.
As they worked together, something magical happened. Zumi's green hair slowly turned back into normal brown hair. Their zombie walk became a confident skip. The more time Zumi spent with a true friend, the more they remembered who they really were.
By summer's end, Zumi wasn't a zombie anymore. But they still loved papayas — and now they had someone to share every single one with.
Lila learned that sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the most wonderful, and that the magic of friendship can transform anyone.
