The Zombie Who Loved Papayas

Lila loved running through her grandmother's garden, especially past the tall palm trees that swayed like dancing green giants. Every morning, she'd wave to them before racing to the secret pond behind the old shed.

One Tuesday, something magical happened. As Lila sat by the water watching Bubbles, her tiny goldfish with scales like melted sunshine, she heard a strange sound. *Scuff. Drag. Scuff.*

Lila peeked behind the papaya tree. There stood the most surprising sight—a zombie! But this wasn't a scary zombie like in movies. He was wearing a bright Hawaiian shirt and had flower petals in his messy green hair. He moved slowly, like he was walking through thick honey, and he looked very sad.

"Are you... lost?" Lila whispered bravely.

The zombie nodded. "Me... Zog. Me... hungry."

Zog's eyes lit up when he spotted the ripe papaya hanging from the tree above. Lila climbed up and plucked the fruit, which glowed golden in the sunlight. She handed it to Zog, who took it with his gentle green hands.

"Papaya!" Zog's face stretched into the biggest smile. "Zog's favorite!"

Zog shared his papaya with Lila and even let Bubbles the goldfish nibble a piece. As they ate together, Lila learned something wonderful: Zog wasn't scary at all—he was just lonely and hungry for friendship. Every day after that, Lila would bring papayas to the garden, and Zog would help the flowers grow taller and brighter with his magical zombie touch.

The other kids in the neighborhood eventually met Zog too. They learned that just because someone looks different, it doesn't mean they're not kind. Sometimes the most unexpected friends become the best ones of all.

Now whenever Lila goes running through the garden, she's never alone. She has her goldfish friend, her papaya-loving zombie friend, and all the magic that comes from keeping your heart open to surprises.
