The Zombie Who Loved Papaya
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially at dusk when fireflies danced between the tomato plants. But tonight, something strange shuffled near the papaya tree.
A zombie!
Lily froze. But this zombie wasn't like the ones in movies. He had flowers braided into his green hair, and instead of saying "brains," he was carefully tending to the ripe papayas with gentle, dirt-covered hands.
"Are you... eating my papayas?" Lily whispered, stepping closer.
The zombie looked up with sad, crinkly eyes. He shook his head and held out a perfect orange papaya like a peace offering.
"Papaya," he said softly, pointing to his chest. "ZOMBIE love papaya."
Lily giggled. "You can talk!"
"ZOMBIE not zombie," he explained. "Garden magic. Sleep for hundred years. Papaya song wake me up."
He showed her how the papaya tree had grown through where he slept, its roots tangling with his dreams. Now ZOMBIE protected the garden, and the papayas kept him magic.
Suddenly, thunder rumbled. "Running!" ZOMBIE cried, grabbing baskets. "Storm coming! Papayas need shelter!"
They spent the next hour running back and forth, gathering ripe fruit and covering delicate plants. Running together, laughing as raindrops began to fall. Running felt different now — not scary, but exciting. Like an adventure.
By midnight, they sat on Nana's porch sharing papaya slices. ZOMBIE told stories about the old days, when gardens covered the whole neighborhood.
"Come back tomorrow?" ZOMBIE asked hopefully.
"Every day," Lily promised. "We can plant more papayas together."
As she drifted off to sleep that night, Lily understood something important: sometimes the scariest-looking things turn out to be the best friends. And the best adventures start with being brave enough to say hello instead of running away.
Unless you're running toward papayas. Then running is perfect.
