The Zombie Who Loved Papaya
Lily loved running through her grandmother's garden, especially on sunny mornings when the papaya tree drooped with ripe golden fruit. But today something strange happened. As she reached for the perfect papaya, a sleepy green figure tumbled out from beneath the leaves.
"Brains?" the figure mumbled, then shook its head. "No, not brains. I think I meant breakfast."
Lily gasped. It was a zombie! But this zombie looked different—friendly, with bright purple eyes and a flower tucked behind its ear.
"I'm Zed," the zombie said, rubbing his stomach. "I've been sleeping under this papaya tree for one hundred years."
"You don't look scary," Lily said bravely.
"That's because I'm a vegetarian zombie," Zed explained. "I dream about fruit, not brains. And that papaya smells delicious."
Lily giggled and plucked the ripest papaya. She shared it with Zed, and as he ate, something magical happened. His green skin turned rosy, and he began dancing!
"I remember now!" Zed exclaimed. "I was cursed by a grumpy wizard. Only the sweetness of a true friend's shared papaya could break the spell."
Just then, Lily's iPhone buzzed. Her mom was calling.
"I have to go," Lily said, "but will you be here tomorrow?"
Zed smiled, his purple eyes twinkling. "Every morning. And bring your running shoes—I know all the secret paths through the enchanted forest."
That night, Lily drifted to sleep with a belly full of papaya and a heart full of magic. Sometimes the scariest-looking surprises turn out to be the sweetest friends of all.
And every day after school, Lily went running through the garden with Zed, sharing papayas and discovering that friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
