The Zombie Who Loved Papaya
Lily discovered the secret pool behind her grandfather's garden on the hottest day of summer. The water sparkled like liquid diamonds, hidden among ancient trees whose leaves whispered secrets to the wind.
But someone was already there.
A small figure shuffled around the pool's edge—arms stiff, face pale, moving with a jerky, puppet-like walk. Lily's heart raced. It looked exactly like the zombies from her big brother's video games!
She almost ran back to the house. But then she noticed something strange. The zombie wasn't moaning or looking scary. It was... gardening?
The little zombie carefully planted flowers around the pool, patting the soil with surprisingly gentle hands. When it saw Lily, it didn't chase her. It simply waved—stiffly, but somehow friendly.
"Hello?" Lily whispered, creeping closer.
The zombie nodded and pointed at a papaya tree nearby, then made eating motions. Its eyes weren't scary at all. They looked kind and sleepy.
Lily noticed the zombie's pale skin was actually covered in a magical shimmer, like moonlight. And the pool's water glowed whenever the zombie stepped near it.
"Are you... magic?" Lily asked.
The zombie nodded again, more enthusiastically this time.
Suddenly, Lily understood. This wasn't a scary zombie. It was a Moon Gardener! Her grandmother had told her stories about them—magical beings who tended enchanted pools at night, but sometimes got stuck in the human world at sunrise. Their magic made them move oddly until the moon returned.
The Moon Gardener looked hungry and weak, far from home. Lily remembered her grandmother's words: "They're sustained by kindness and tropical fruit."
She scrambled up the papaya tree and picked the ripest, sweetest papaya she could find. When she offered it, the Moon Gardener's eyes lit up. It took the fruit with both stiff hands and took a bite.
Magical sparkles burst from the papaya! The Gardener's movements became smoother, their skin glowed brighter, and the pool began to hum with ancient songs.
"Thank you," the Moon Gardener spoke, their voice like wind chimes. "I was stuck between worlds. Your kindness and this perfect papaya have given me the magic to return home."
They stepped into the pool, which now swirled with silver light. "Never judge by appearances, Lily. Sometimes what seems scary is just someone who needs help."
The Moon Gardener dissolved into moonlight and joined the stars above.
That night, Lily saw the moon glowing extra bright. And the next morning, a new papaya tree had sprouted by the secret pool—its fruit shimmering with tiny sparkles, a gift from her friend in the stars.
