The Zombie Who Loved Papaya
Luna found the zombie behind the papaya tree, but he wasn't scary at all. He was green, yes, and moved a bit slowly, but he wore a bright yellow hat and held a half-eaten papaya like it was the most precious treasure in the world.
"Are you going to eat my brain?" Luna asked, clutching her notebook. She'd read enough stories to know zombies loved brains.
The zombie shook his head sadly. He pointed at the papaya and made a happy little grunting sound.
Luna's golden dog, Buster, trotted over and sniffed the zombie's shoe. Buster's tail thumped happily. Good — if Buster trusted him, he couldn't be all bad.
Just then, a red fox peeked from behind the garden wall. She wore tiny sunglasses and carried a notepad.
"I knew it!" whispered the fox. "I've been spying for weeks, and finally I've found him."
"Found who?" Luna asked.
"The Last Gardener," said the fox, removing her sunglasses. "The magical zombie who tends the secret papaya patch that grants wishes."
The zombie nodded enthusiastically and offered Luna a slice of papaya. It glowed softly in his green hand.
Luna took a bite. Sweet, sunshiny flavors exploded in her mouth. She suddenly understood — wishes didn't come from magic fruit. They came from kindness, from unexpected friendships, from a dog who saw the good in everyone, and from a fox who paid enough attention to notice the small wonders.
"I wish..." Luna began, but then she stopped. She looked at the zombie gardener, at Buster wagging his tail, at the fox who had seen beauty where others saw only scary stories. She was already surrounded by magic.
The zombie smiled. Some magic, he seemed to say, doesn't need wishes at all.
And every morning after that, Luna found papayas on her doorstep — and sometimes, if she looked very carefully, she'd see a flash of green and a bright yellow hat disappearing behind the garden wall.
