The Zombie Who Loved Papaya

Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer, she spent hours at the neighborhood pool, diving like a dolphin and racing imaginary mermaids across the sparkling blue water.

One hot afternoon, while practicing her underwater somersaults, she noticed something strange at the bottom of the pool. A greenish figure was sitting on the pool floor, not moving at all.

Lily surfaced, gasping for air. Her heart beat fast. Was it what she thought it was?

She dove again and saw—it was a zombie! But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He was wearing water wings and holding his nose with one finger.

Lily popped up beside him. The zombie slowly floated to the surface, water dripping from his patchy skin.

"Hello," said Lily bravely. "I'm Lily. Do you want to swim together?"

The zombie looked surprised. He nodded shyly and pointed at himself. "Zom," he said.

"Nice to meet you, Zom!" Lily grinned. "Do you like games?"

Zom's eyes lit up. He showed her his favorite game—floating like a starfish while counting fish on the pool tiles. They played until the sun began to set, painting the sky pink and orange.

The next day, Lily brought her favorite snack: sweet, sunny papaya from her grandmother's garden. She offered a piece to Zom.

Zom took a tiny bite. His face twisted, then brightened. "Papaya!" he exclaimed, trying the word for the first time. Soon they were both laughing, sharing papaya by the poolside.

That's when a large shadow fell over them. A bear!

Lily stood protectively in front of Zom. But the bear just sat down and held out a paw. He wanted papaya too!

Zom timidly offered the bear a piece. The bear munch happily and grunted with joy. The three new friends spent the afternoon together—Zom teaching the bear to blow bubbles, Lily teaching both to do cannonballs, and everyone sharing papaya.

Lily learned something wonderful that summer: friendship comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Even zombies and bears can become best friends when you open your heart.

And every day after that, the pool became the most magical place in the world—where a girl, a zombie, and a bear would swim, laugh, and share papaya under the warm sun.
