The Zombie Who Loved Palms

Lily loved exploring behind her house, where the palm trees swayed like dancing green umbrellas. Every afternoon, she'd search for treasures in the sand—shiny shells, smooth rocks, and once, a perfect pyramid-shaped shell that sparkled like tiny stars.

One particularly hot day, Lily heard a sad groaning sound coming from behind the biggest palm tree. She crept closer and gasped. There, sitting in the shadow, was a zombie!

But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He had patchy blue hair, one button eye, and he was carefully arranging fallen palm fronds into a neat little house. He looked up at Lily, and instead of moaning, he sighed.

"I'm Zombear," he said shyly. "I'm not scary. I'm just lonely."

Lily stepped forward bravely. "I'm Lily. Why are you sad?"

Zombear held up his hands. They were stitched together clumsily. "Everyone runs away when they see me. They think I want to eat brains. But I only want friends. And look—" he pointed to his palm frond house proudly—"I built this all by myself!"

Lily clapped her hands. "It's wonderful! Can I help you add a roof?"

Together, they worked until sunset, weaving palm fronds into a cozy little hut. Other children from the neighborhood gathered, curious about what Lily was doing. When they saw Zombear carefully placing a pyramid-shaped shell on top of his new house like a flag, they didn't run away. They asked to help.

By the time the stars came out, Zombear wasn't lonely anymore. He had five new friends and the best palm frond fort in the whole world.

Lily learned something important that day: sometimes the things that seem scary are just waiting for someone brave enough to say hello. And sometimes, the best friends come in the most surprising packages.
