The Zombie Who Loved Padel
Lily and Max climbed into the old cable car that dangled over the valley. Every Saturday, it took them to the magical court where they learned to play padel, their favorite game.
"Race you there!" Max shouted as the cable car began its journey. Below them, the world looked tiny and perfect.
When they arrived, something strange was waiting on the padel court. It was green and bumpy, with one shoe missing and arms that wobbled like spaghetti.
"A zombie!" Lily gasped, hiding behind her padel racket.
The zombie looked sad. It held out a tennis ball with one wobbly hand and pointed at the padel court with the other.
"I think he wants to play," Max whispered bravely.
Lily peered around her racket. The zombie wasn't scary at all. It just looked lonely. Its eyes were bright and friendly, and it was trying to smile, though its face didn't quite work that way.
"Come play with us!" Lily called out. "We'll teach you padel!"
The zombie's face lit up (as much as it could). It wobbled onto the court, and Lily gently showed it how to hold the racket. The zombie was clumsy at first, hitting the ball everywhere except over the net. But Lily and Max didn't laugh. They just kept trying.
By sunset, the zombie was getting better. It even did a little wobbly victory dance when it finally hit the ball over the net.
"We should call him Zimpy," Max said.
Zimpy the zombie smiled his best smile. For the first time, he wasn't lonely anymore. He had friends who saw past his scary outside and found the friendly inside.
Every Saturday after that, Lily, Max, and Zimpy would ride the cable car together for padel. And Zimpy learned that sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures just need someone to give them a chance.
The magical thing about friendship is that it doesn't care what you look like. It only cares about what's inside your heart.
