The Zombie Who Loved Padel
Lily and Max were playing their favorite game on the padel court near the community pool. The sun sparkled on the blue water as they hit the ball back and forth, laughing when it bounced into the fence.
Suddenly, something green and shuffling appeared from behind the pool house. It had messy hair, ragged clothes, and walked with a funny wobble.
"It's a zombie!" whispered Lily, hiding behind her padel racket. But the zombie didn't moan like in the movies. Instead, it watched them play with big, sad eyes.
Max noticed something strange. The zombie was clapping its hands—clumsily, but happily—every time they made a good shot.
"I think he wants to play," Max said bravely.
The zombie nodded eagerly! Its name was Zed, and he explained (between happy grunts) that he'd been lonely for 200 years. Everyone always ran away because he looked spooky, but he just wanted friends.
"Want to learn padel?" Lily asked.
Zed's face lit up. He wasn't scary at all—he was just different. His green skin was actually quite pretty, like moss on a tree. And his wobbly walk made him extra careful when he ran.
They played padel all afternoon. Zed was terrible at first—his racket kept falling out of his hands—but Lily and Max didn't mind. They taught him how to serve, how to volley, and how to do a fancy smash.
When Zed finally hit the ball over the net, he cheered so loudly that the pool water rippled with joy.
"Tomorrow, we can play in the pool!" said Max. "Do you like swimming?"
"I love water!" Zed grinned. "The zombie part of me stays dry, but my heart loves to splash."
As the sun set, the three new friends walked home together, tired and happy. Lily learned an important lesson: sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone to give them a chance. And Zed learned that after 200 years of loneliness, he had finally found his forever friends—all because of a game, a pool, and two kids who weren't afraid to be kind.
