The Zombie Who Loved Padel
Lily and Max were the best padel players in Sunnyvale. Every Saturday, they raced to the community pool's padel court, their paddles bouncing against their backpacks.
One cloudy afternoon, as they served the ball back and forth, they heard a strange moan. "Ralllllyyyyy..."
Max froze. The ball rolled away. Behind the pool fence shuffling slowly was a green-skinned figure in tattered clothes— a zombie!
Lily grabbed her paddle. But the zombie didn't attack. He just stared at the padel court with sad, milky eyes.
"You... you want to play?" Lily asked.
The zombie nodded slowly. "Padel," he croaked.
Max's eyes widened. "You know padel?"
"Used to play," the zombie whispered. "Before... the change."
His name was Zed, and he'd been a padel champion fifty years ago. Now he shuffled around the old pool at night, remembering the game he loved.
Lily and Max looked at each other and smiled. "Want to join?"
Zed's green face lit up. He shuffling to the court, his movements awkward but determined. Lily tossed him a spare paddle. Zed caught it— and something magical happened. As he swung, his stiff arms loosened. His shuffled became a skip. With every hit, the zombie's groans turned to laughs.
Soon children from the pool gathered to watch. Zed wasn't scary anymore. He was just someone who loved the game, someone who needed a friend.
"Zed!" a parent called. "You're that champion from the old tournaments!"
Zed blushed green. That evening, Zed joined the Sunnyvale Padel Club. The community pool became his home, and the children became his friends.
Lily learned something important that day: Sometimes things seem scary just because we don't understand them. But with kindness and an open heart, even a zombie can become family.
And every Saturday, you can still see Zed at the pool, his green skin shining in the sun, playing the best padel game in Sunnyvale— and teaching everyone that friendship is the greatest magic of all.
