The Zombie Who Loved Padel
Lily and Max loved playing padel at the old court near the beach. Every Saturday, they'd grab their racquets and hit the ball back and forth, laughing as they dived for impossible shots. But there was one problem—the strange figure who always watched from behind the swaying palm tree.
"It's the zombie!" Max whispered, ducking behind the padel court fence. Every week, the same person stood there, half-hidden by palm fronds, moving slowly and staring at them with wide, curious eyes.
Lily nodded. Her older brother had told her stories about the beach zombie who watched children play. But today, something magical happened. A seagull swooped down and stole the zombie's bright green hat! The figure gasped and stumbled forward, revealing—not a scary monster at all, but a kind-faced old man with silver hair and a gentle smile.
"My hat!" he called, chasing the seagull toward the ocean.
Lily and Max exchanged glances. This wasn't a zombie. This was someone's grandpa! Gathering their courage, they ran to help. Together, they cornered the seagull near a coconut palm. The bird dropped the hat, and Max grabbed it triumphantly.
"Thank you, young friends," the man said, beaming. "I'm Mr. Rivera. I've been watching you play padel for months. You see, I used to be a champion when I was young, but my arthritis makes me move slowly now. People started calling me the beach zombie because I shuffle along so slowly."
Lily's eyes widened. "Could you teach us your special shot?"
Mr. Rivera's face lit up. For the next hour, the palm tree shaded their new friendship as the former champion taught the children his legendary "sunrise swing." They learned that day that the things that seem scary sometimes turn out to be the most wonderful surprises—and that true friendship can bloom anywhere, even behind a palm tree near a padel court.
From then on, every Saturday, three racquets clicked together on the court, and nobody called Mr. Rivera the zombie anymore. They called him Coach.
