The Zombie Who Loved Padel
Maya skipped toward the padel court, her favorite spot in the whole world. The sun was setting behind the tall palm trees, painting everything gold. She loved how the fronds swayed in the warm evening breeze, like they were dancing just for her.
"I'll get you this time!" Maya's best friend Leo laughed, tossing her the ball.
But as Maya raised her racket, something strange happened. Her iPhone, which she'd left on the bench, began to glow. Not just the screen—the whole phone shimmered with purple light!
Suddenly, a figure stepped out from behind the palm tree. He had green skin, messy hair, and walked a bit stiffly. A zombie! Maya almost screamed.
"Don't be scared," the zombie said softly. "My name is Zed, and I've been watching you play. It looks like so much fun."
Zed wasn't like the zombies in movies. He smiled shyly and held out his hand. His skin wasn't rotten at all—it sparkled like emerald dust.
"You're... a zombie?" Maya asked, lowering her racket.
"From the Magic Realm," Zed nodded. "Everyone there loves games, but we don't have anything like padel. Would you teach me?"
Maya looked at Leo, who grinned. "Why not? Everyone deserves to play!"
For the next hour, Maya and Leo taught Zed how to hold the racket, how to serve, and how to laugh when he missed the ball. Zed's zombie arms turned out to be perfect for padel—he could stretch them to reach impossible shots!
"Thank you," Zed said when the moon rose above the palm trees. "You made me feel like I belonged."
"That's what friends do," Maya said, and she meant it.
Zed pressed his glowing hand to her iPhone. "Now you can visit me anytime."
As Zed disappeared into sparkles, Maya realized something wonderful: sometimes the scariest-looking people just want someone to play with. And that was the best magic of all.
