The Zombie Who Loved Oranges

Penny's yellow rainboots crunched through autumn leaves as she explored the misty forest behind her house. The trees were bare, their branches like fingers reaching toward the gray sky. Something moved in the bushes.

Out stumbled a zombie—but not like the scary ones in movies. This one had messy orange tufts of hair sticking straight up, and his green skin looked more like pea soup than anything frightening. He held out a shaking hand.

"I'm not going to eat your brains," he said sadly. "I just want to know if you have any oranges."

Penny tilted her head. "Oranges?"

"My name is Zim," the zombie explained. "I've been wandering for weeks. My skin keeps turning greener and greener, and my hair is falling out in clumps. My grandmother told me before I... well, before I became this way... that oranges have special powers."

Penny's eyes widened. "Vitamin C! My mom says it's like magic for your body."

"Exactly!" Zim's face lit up. "But I'm too slow to climb trees, and my fingers are too clumsy to peel them. Will you help?"

Penny reached into her backpack and pulled out the tangerine she'd packed for lunch. She peeled it quickly, the sweet citrus scent filling the air. Zim's eyes grew round as she handed him each segment.

He ate slowly, savoring every bite. Something magical happened. His skin began to glow with a healthy golden tint. His wild orange hair puffed up like a dandelion, soft and full again. He stood taller, smiling so brightly that Penny couldn't help but smile back.

"Thank you," Zim said, spinning around. "I feel... alive again! Well, more alive than I've felt in a hundred years."

"Will you be my friend?" Penny asked. "I can bring oranges every day."

"I'd like that," Zim said. "And maybe I can help you with your homework. I used to be a teacher, you know."

From that day on, Penny and Zim were best friends. The other children in town were scared at first, but when they saw how Zim helped little ones cross the street and told the funniest jokes, they learned that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need a little kindness—and maybe plenty of vitamin C.
