The Zombie Who Loved Oranges
Maya peeked through her bedroom window, her eyes wide with wonder. In her backyard, something strange was moving near the swimming pool. It shuffled slowly, its arms stretched out like a sleepwalker.
"It's a zombie!" Maya whispered to her dog, Barnaby. The golden retriever thumped his tail happily, completely unconcerned.
But this zombie wasn't scary at all. As Maya watched, she noticed something peculiar. The zombie stopped by her orange tree and reached up with clumsy green fingers, plucking a bright orange from a branch. It held the fruit like a treasure.
Maya's curiosity overcame her fear. She slipped outside, and Barnaby bounded ahead, wagging his tail furiously. To Maya's surprise, the zombie didn't moan or chase them. Instead, it simply sat down by the pool, carefully peeling the orange.
"Hi," Maya said softly.
The zombie looked up with kind, crinkly eyes. "Hello," it said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I'm Zim. I'm not really a zombie—I'm a magical garden guardian who woke up from a very long nap."
Zim offered Maya a slice of orange. It was the sweetest she had ever tasted. "Why were you walking like that?" she asked.
"I was still stretching my legs from my hundred-year sleep!" Zim laughed. "And I was looking for friends."
Maya grinned. "Well, you found one. And Barnaby seems to like you too."
For the rest of the afternoon, Maya, Zim, and Barnaby played by the pool. Zim showed them how to make orange peel boats that sailed across the water. Barnaby splashed happily, trying to catch the little orange boats.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky pink and gold, Maya learned something important. Sometimes the things that seem strange or scary at first turn out to be the most wonderful friends of all.
"Will you come back tomorrow?" Maya asked.
"Every day," Zim promised, "as long as there are oranges to share."
Maya went to bed that night with a full heart and a sticky orange mustache, already dreaming of tomorrow's adventure with her newest friend.
