The Zombie Who Loved Oranges
Lily was running through the park, her orange sneakers flashing in the sunlight. Beside her bounded Barnaby, her scruffy brown dog, ears flopping in the wind like excited wings.
"Race you to the pond!" Lily called out, laughing as she sped ahead.
Barnaby barked happily, splashing into the water with a giant WOOSH! Lily joined him, and soon they were both soaked and giggling.
That's when they saw him. A figure shambling slowly from behind the old oak tree. His skin was pale green, his clothes were tattered, and he moved with a stiff, jerky motion.
"A zombie!" Lily whispered, grabbing Barnaby's wet fur.
But then the zombie did something strange. He stopped, sniffed the air, and reached into his pocket. Slowly, carefully, he pulled out a bright orange tangerine.
"Orange?" the zombie groaned softly, holding it out.
Lily gasped. "You... you like oranges?"
The zombie nodded, his pale face breaking into the clumsiest, sweetest smile Lily had ever seen.
From that day on, Lily and Barnaby visited their new friend every afternoon. They discovered his name was Zed, and he wasn't scary at all. He just moved slowly because he'd forgotten how to run, and no one had ever invited him to play.
"I'll teach you!" Lily declared.
Every day, she and Zed practiced running. At first, he could only shuffle. Then he managed a clumsy jog. Finally, after weeks of practice, Zed ran across the meadow, arms flailing, grinning wider than ever.
"I'm RUNNING!" Zed cheered.
Barnaby barked joyfully, chasing after his new best friend.
And every evening, they celebrated with their favorite snack — sweet, juicy oranges, shared between a girl, a dog, and a zombie who had remembered how to live.
