The Zombie Who Loved Orange Sunsets
Lily loved swimming more than anything. Every summer afternoon, she and her golden dog Sunny would race to the crystal lake behind their house.
One day, while splashing in the shallows, Lily spotted someone watching from behind an old oak tree. It looked like a zombie! Its skin was pale green, and it walked strangely, dragging one foot.
Lily froze. Sunny growled softly, then his tail began to wag.
"That's not a zombie!" Lily whispered. "Zombies aren't real... right?"
But the creature shuffled closer. Lily's heart beat fast. She remembered what her mother said: sometimes things that seem scary are just misunderstood.
"Hello?" Lily called out.
The zombie stopped. From behind its back, it pulled something bright and round—a perfect orange!
"My name is Zoe," the zombie said in a soft voice. "I was playing dress-up for Halloween practice. Want to share my orange?"
Lily laughed with relief. Zoe wasn't a zombie at all—just a new friend who loved playing pretend! Her green face paint had dried in the sun, making her walk stiffly.
Soon, all three of them were swimming together. Sunny chased orange slices across the water while Lily and Zoe played mermaids. They watched the sun set, painting the sky in brilliant shades of—you guessed it—orange!
"I'm glad I didn't run away," Lily said as they walked home. "You're the best friend I've ever made from almost being scared by a zombie!"
Zoe giggled. "And I'm glad my Halloween costume helped me find a swimming buddy!"
That night, Lily learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the most magical adventures—if you're brave enough to say hello.
