The Zombie Who Loved Orange Sunsets
Lily loved spending her summers at Grandma's beach house. Every morning, she would run across the warm sand, past the swaying palm trees, and splash into the sparkling blue water. Swimming was her favorite thing in the whole world.
One evening, as the sky turned the most brilliant orange, Lily saw something strange near the old pier. A greenish figure was stumbling around on the sand. It looked like a zombie! Lily's heart beat fast. Grandma had told her stories about zombies, but this one didn't look scary — it looked sad.
Lily crept closer. The zombie was picking up orange seashells and arranging them in a perfect circle. When it saw Lily, it didn't moan or try to grab her. Instead, it pointed at the orange sunset and made a happy sound.
"You like orange too?" Lily whispered.
The zombie nodded vigorously. Its face was green and wrinkly, but its eyes were kind. It patted its chest and said, "Zim!"
"Is that your name? Zim?" Lily asked.
Zim nodded again and held out an orange shell as a gift. Lily gasped — it was beautiful!
"I'm Lily," she said. "Do you want to be my friend?"
Zim's eyes lit up. For the next hour, they played together on the beach. Zim wasn't a scary zombie at all. He was a magical sea creature who only came to shore during orange sunsets. He couldn't swim very well, so Lily showed him how to float and kick. They laughed as Zim splashed and tried to do cannonballs off the pier.
As the sky grew dark, Zim pointed to the ocean. He had to go home.
"Will I see you again?" Lily asked.
Zim placed a perfect orange shell in her hand and wrapped her fingers around it. Then he slipped into the waves and disappeared.
Lily visited the beach every sunset after that. She learned that sometimes things that seem scary are actually just lonely and waiting for a friend. And every time she held her orange shell, she remembered Zim — the zombie who taught her that friendship can bloom anywhere, even in the most unexpected places.
