The Zombie Who Loved Orange Stars
Emma was lying on the grass, watching clouds drift across the bright blue sky, when she heard it. A strange shuffling sound coming from behind the old oak tree.
She sat up, heart pounding. Could it be a zombie? Her brother Leo always said zombies lived in the woods. Emma's legs twitched with running instinct, but something made her peek around the tree instead.
There, stumbling over roots, was the saddest creature Emma had ever seen. Its skin was pale as moonlight, its clothes were tattered and dusty, and it moved as if each step took all its strength. But what caught Emma's attention was what the creature was clutching—a bright orange leaf, glowing in its hands like a tiny lantern.
The zombie looked up and let out the smallest sigh. Not scary. Just... lonely.
Emma stepped forward. "Are you okay?"
The creature blinked slowly. Its eyes weren't scary at all. They were the color of warm sunlight.
"I..." the zombie's voice sounded like autumn leaves crunching. "I fell from the Star Garden. I was looking for the most beautiful orange star to bring back, but I fell so far, and now I can't find my way home."
Emma's fear melted into wonder. A Star Garden zombie? That was the most magical thing she'd ever heard!
"I can help you!" Emma said. "But why orange?"
The zombie's whole face brightened. "Orange is the color of warmth and friendship. It's what makes stars shine brightest."
Together, Emma and the zombie—whose name was Lumis—searched for fallen stars. Emma moved fast, running ahead to check behind bushes. Lumis shuffled slowly, but his pale eyes sparkled with hope.
They found three orange stars scattered through the woods, each one humming with soft magic. As Lumis collected each star, he glowed a little brighter.
"Thank you," Lumis said, holding out his hand. "You didn't run away when you saw something scary-looking. You stayed. That's the bravest thing anyone can do."
Emma beamed. She had learned something important: sometimes the scariest-looking things just need a little kindness, and real bravery means staying to help instead of running away.
That night, Emma watched Lumis float back up to the sky, his orange stars dancing around him like fireflies. She fell asleep dreaming of Star Gardens, knowing that sometimes the most magical friendships come from the most unexpected places.
