The Zombie Who Loved Orange

In the tiny town of Sugarcreek, something peculiar happened every autumn. Leaves turned gold, pumpkins grew plump, and a friendly zombie named Zed would wake up from his year-long nap.

Zed wasn't like other zombies. He didn't want brains. He didn't groan or shuffle. Instead, he loved one thing more than anything else: the color orange.

One morning, eleven-year-old Mia was playing games on her iphone when she heard a rustling in her backyard. Peering through the window, she saw Zed carefully arranging orange marigolds in a perfect rainbow pattern.

"That's beautiful!" she called out, stepping outside.

Zed jumped, his green skin turning slightly pink. "Oh! Hello, little human. I was just... organizing."

"Why orange?" Mia asked, sitting beside him.

Zed's gray eyes sparkled. "When I was very young—before I became a zombie—my grandmother had an orange tree in her garden. Every Sunday, we'd pick the ripest oranges and make fresh juice. Orange reminds me of warmth, sunshine, and love."

Mia smiled. "That's beautiful. But why arrange them like this?"

"I'm trying to create something wonderful," Zed explained. "But something's missing."

Mia thought for a moment, then grabbed her iphone. "What if we add glowing orange lights? And orange ribbons? And maybe... orange butterflies?"

Together, they worked all afternoon. Mia strung fairy lights while Zed painted wooden butterflies with bright orange wings. They hung orange ribbons from the old oak tree and placed carved pumpkins around the garden.

As the sun set, their creation glowed like magic. The whole neighborhood gathered to see Zed's orange wonderland. Children laughed, parents took photos, and for the first time ever, no one was afraid of the zombie who lived in the woods.

"It's perfect," Zed whispered, happy tears streaming down his face.

Mia squeezed his hand. "You know what the best part is?"

"What?"

"You turned something scary into something beautiful. That's the most powerful magic of all."

That night, Zed didn't feel lonely anymore. He had found something better than memories of orange juice—he had found a friend, and a community that celebrated what made him different.

And every autumn after that, the whole town helped Zed create his orange garden, proving that even zombies with green skin and gray eyes can paint the world with the colors of love.
