The Zombie Who Loved Moonlight

Lily lived in a house with a purple door and a cat named Mochi who had ears like tiny triangles. Every night, Mochi would scratch at the window, meowing at the old palm tree that swayed in the backyard breeze.

One stormy evening, Lily heard a splash. She peeked outside and gasped—a greenish figure was swimming in the garden pond! The town called him the Zombie, a creature children whispered about at bedtime. But this zombie didn't look scary. He looked... lonely.

Mochi darted outside and leaped right onto the zombie's soggy shoulder. The creature froze, then let out the gentlest sigh Lily had ever heard.

"Are you... real?" Lily whispered, stepping into the rain.

The zombie nodded slowly. His name was Zed, and he'd been swimming in this pond every full moon for three hundred years. He wasn't dead—he was just magically stuck, waiting for someone brave enough to say hello.

Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating Zed's true form. He wasn't scary at all. Underneath the magic spell, he was a guardian spirit who protected the pond's magic!

"I've been so lonely," Zed said, his voice like rustling leaves. "Everyone ran away before they could see who I really am."

Lily smiled. "Sometimes scary things are just friends we haven't met yet."

She sat by the palm tree with Mochi and Zed, watching the lightning dance. They talked about adventures and dreams until dawn. Zed promised to teach Mochi to swim, and Lily promised to visit every full moon.

That night, Lily learned that courage isn't about being fearless—it's about being kind enough to look past appearances and find the magic underneath. Sometimes, the most wonderful friends are the ones we're told to avoid.

Now, every full moon, you can see them: a girl, her cat, and a friendly ghost, swimming together under the palm tree, while lightning paints pictures across the sky.
