The Zombie Who Loved Moonbeams

Lily's golden retriever, Buster, was more than just a dog. He was her best friend and adventure partner. Every summer night, they'd sneak to the old swimming pool behind Mr. Abernathy's house.

Tonight, the pool glowed with a strange orange light from the harvest moon. Lily gasped. A green figure sat by the pool's edge, drooping like a wilted flower. It looked like a zombie, but instead of being scary, it seemed terribly sad.

Buster wagged his tail and approached carefully. Lily's heart raced, but she followed her brave dog.

"Hello?" she whispered.

The zombie looked up with kind, crinkly eyes. "I'm Zora," she said softly. "I'm the moon's pool keeper. But I've forgotten my magic words."

Zora explained that every Halloween, she needed to say magic words to keep the pool filled with moonbeams—magical dust that made children's dreams come true. Without it, kids would have nightmares instead.

"What magic words?" Lily asked.

"Friendship," Zora sighed. "I haven't had a friend in three hundred years. Friendship powers the magic."

Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out an orange segment from her snack. "Here," she said, offering the fruit. "Friends share."

Zora's eyes brightened. As she took the orange, her green skin began to sparkle. The pool suddenly filled with shimmering silver light.

"You remembered!" Zora cried. "Friendship IS the magic!"

Buster barked happily, splashing into the glowing pool. Moonbeams danced around them like tiny stars. Zora laughed, and the sound was like wind chimes.

"Will you come back tomorrow?" Zora asked. "Friends visit each other."

"Every night," Lily promised. "That's what friends do."

That Halloween, children everywhere had the sweetest dreams. And in the moonlit pool, a little girl, her dog, and a magical zombie learned that the strongest magic of all is simply being a friend.
