The Zombie Who Loved Magic

Lily never liked the old zombie doll in her toy box. Its green skin was cracked, one button eye hung loose, and its messy orange hair stuck up like it had seen a ghost. But everything changed on the day her friend Tommy came over.

"Let's have a pool party!" Tommy cheered, grabbing his water wings.

Their backyard pool wasn't magical yet, but Lily's grandma had always said, "Add a sprinkle of imagination, and anything can become wonderful."

"Can Zombie come too?" Tommy asked, picking up the creepy doll.

Lily wrinkled her nose. "He's too scary."

"Maybe he's just lonely," Tommy said gently. "Sometimes things that look different on the outside are really special on the inside."

That afternoon, as they splashed in the pool, something strange happened. Water droplets on Zombie's face sparkled like tiny stars. His ragged hair began to wave underwater as if he were dancing. Lily gasped — the zombie wasn't scary at all. He was smiling!

"He's magical!" Lily cried.

All summer long, Zombie became their most special friend. He loved doing cannonballs (making soft splash sounds), he told silly jokes that only children could hear, and his wild hair changed colors like a rainbow — blue when he was happy, pink when someone shared, and gold when they were especially kind.

One day, a new kid moved in next door. "Ew, a zombie!" she sneered. "That's the ugliest doll I've ever seen."

Lily felt a flash of anger, but then she remembered Tommy's words. She knelt down and looked at Zombie's crooked smile.

"He's not ugly," Lily said softly. "He's beautiful because he's our friend. And friends don't have to look perfect to be perfect."

The new girl watched as Zombie's hair turned the most beautiful purple she had ever seen. She slowly reached out her hand.

"Maybe... maybe I could be his friend too?"

By summer's end, the pool wasn't just a swimming hole anymore. It was a magical place where three children and one very special zombie learned that the best kind of beauty comes from kindness, the strongest magic comes from friendship, and sometimes, the most wonderful friends are the ones you almost didn't give a chance.

And Zombie? He finally had the only thing he ever really wanted — a family who loved him, patches and all.
