The Zombie Who Loved Hugs

Lily was running through the Whispering Woods, her favorite cat Mittens trotting happily beside her. The autumn leaves crunched under their boots as they followed the path to their secret hiding spot—a cozy cave behind the waterfall.

But today, something was different. A deep, rumbly voice echoed from inside the cave. "Go away... I'm too scary for friends."

Lily peeked around the waterfall and gasped. A giant bear sat in the cave, his fur soft and brown. But he wasn't like any bear she'd seen in books. One of his paws was green and sparkly, and he moved slowly, like he was still half-asleep.

"Are you... a zombie?" Lily whispered, remembering the spooky stories her older brother told.

The bear nodded sadly. "Yes, I'm Zed the Zombie Bear. I was cursed by a grumpy wizard. Now everyone runs away from me because they think I'm scary. But I just want someone to play with."

Mittens the cat walked right up to Zed and rubbed her fuzzy head against his sparkly green paw. She purred so loudly that the whole cave vibrated.

Zed's eyes widened. "She's not scared?"

"Mittens knows a gentle heart when she feels one," Lily said, stepping closer. "And I do too. Do you want to play tag?"

Zed's face lit up like sunshine. "Really? Nobody's wanted to play with me since... since forever!"

Soon, all three new friends were running through the woods, playing hide-and-seek behind the ancient oak trees. Zed was slow because of his zombie paw, but he was the best at hiding because he could stay perfectly still like a statue.

When the sun began to set, Lily hugged Zed goodbye. "You're not scary at all, Zed. You're the best friend ever."

"And you're the first person who ever gave me a chance," Zed said, his sparkling green paw glowing warmer than before. The grumpy wizard's curse began to fade, just a little, because friendship is the most powerful magic of all.

From that day on, Lily, Mittens, and Zed had adventures every day—proving that the scariest-looking creatures often have the kindest hearts.
