The Zombie Who Loved Green Things
In the garden behind old Mrs. Pennyworth's house, something magical happened every full moon. That's when the pool in her backyard would glow like liquid moonlight, and the strangest friend would appear.
His name was Zeb, and he was a zombie. But not the scary kind from stories. Zeb was a friendly zombie with patchy green skin, one button eye, and a smile that looked like a lopsided rainbow. He lumbered slowly through the garden, making soft groaning sounds that sounded like "hello" if you listened carefully.
Zeb loved plants. Especially the spinach patch.
"Spinach gives you strong muscles," he'd tell the garden gnomes, flexing his arms that were stuffed with soft cotton and magical herbs. Every night, he tended the spinach plants, singing them sleepy songs.
One evening, young Lily peeked through the fence. She'd been watching Zeb for weeks.
"Why do you like spinach so much?" she asked.
Zeb jumped, his button eye twinkling. "Oh! A human friend!" He shuffled closer. "Spinach is special. It grows better when you talk to it. When you eat it, you feel brave."
Lily laughed. "My mom says that too. But I think it's just yucky."
Zeb's smile faded. "Maybe you haven't tried magical spinach." He led her to the glowing pool. "Look."
In the moonlight, the water showed a reflection—but not their reflection. It showed a cable stretching from the pool into the sky, connecting to stars.
"This cable carries dreams," Zeb whispered. "And spinach helps you climb it."
Lily gasped. "Really?"
"Really." Zeb plucked a bright green leaf. "One bite, and you'll see."
Lily tried it. CRUNCH. Her eyes widened. Suddenly, she could see tiny fairies dancing on the spinach leaves. She felt light as a feather, brave as a lion.
"Zeb!" she hugged the surprised zombie. "This is amazing!"
Every full moon after that, Lily and Zeb tended the garden together. They ate magical spinach, made wishes by the glowing pool, and sometimes—just sometimes—they imagined they could climb that star-cable into dreams.
The garden grew fuller. Mrs. Pennyworth wondered why her vegetables were so extraordinary. But Lily and Zeb just smiled, sharing their secret friendship.
Because sometimes, the best friends are the ones you least expect—even if one of them happens to be a zombie who absolutely loves his spinach.
