The Zombie Who Loved Green
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden. She had wild, curly red hair that bounced when she ran, and Grandma always said, "Your hair has magic in it, darling!"
One sunny afternoon, Lily sat by the garden pond, eating her favorite snack—fresh, crunchy spinach leaves from the vegetable patch. She heard a rustling sound behind the big oak tree.
"Hello?" she called softly.
Out stepped a green figure. It had messy grass-stained hair and moved a bit stiffly, like it was still waking up from a very long nap. It looked like a zombie from her brother's video games, but somehow different. Instead of looking scary, it looked sad and confused.
"Are you... a zombie?" Lily whispered.
The creature nodded slowly, its eyes gentle. It pointed at the spinach in her hand.
"You want some spinach?" Lily asked, holding out a leaf.
The zombie's face lit up. It took the spinach and ate it with joy! Then it did something amazing—it knelt by a wilted flower, touched it gently, and the flower suddenly bloomed bright purple!
"You make things grow!" Lily exclaimed.
The zombie nodded, smiling. It was a Garden Zombie, a magical guardian who had been asleep for fifty years. It was hungry because it needed spinach to use its growing magic.
"Come with me!" Lily grabbed its hand and led it to the vegetable patch. The zombie ate spinach happily, then made carrots, tomatoes, and pumpkins grow instantly. Grandma would be so surprised!
Suddenly, Lily heard splashing. "Grandma's pool!" she cried. "The Garden Zombie must be thirsty from swimming here!" She realized the zombie had been sleeping underground near water all these years.
Grandma came outside, holding her iPhone to show Lily pictures of flowers she wanted to plant. She stopped, surprised. Then she smiled. "I remember stories about Garden Zombies! They were friends to everyone who loved the earth."
That summer, Lily and the Garden Zombie became best friends. It helped Grandma's garden become the most beautiful in the neighborhood. And every day, Lily brought it fresh spinach—a small gift for a friend who made the world bloom.
Sometimes the most wonderful friends are the ones you least expect to meet.
