The Zombie Who Loved Goldfish
Lily was the best seven-year-old spy in the whole world. She had a magnifying glass, a notebook, and a very serious face. Her mission? To solve the mystery of the backyard pool.
Every afternoon, she'd hide behind the big oak tree and watch her big brother Marcus and his friends play padel. They hit the ball back and forth, shouting and laughing. But Lily noticed something strange.
Sometimes, Marcus would walk funny. His arms would stick out straight, and he'd say "BRAINS" in a silly voice.
"Aha!" Lily whispered in her notebook. "Marcus has turned into a zombie!"
That's when she saw it — a tiny orange goldfish swimming in a bowl on the patio table. The fish would swim to the glass whenever Marcus walked by.
Lily knew what she had to do. She put on her spy hat (her dad's old baseball cap) and marched toward the pool.
"Marcus the Zombie!" she announced. "I know your secret!"
Marcus froze. His friends stopped playing padel. Everyone looked at Lily.
"You... you know?" Marcus asked, doing his funny zombie walk again.
"Yes!" Lily pointed at the goldfish bowl. "You're trying to eat Goldie's food, but she keeps looking at you because she wants to be friends! That's why you say 'BRAINS' — you're hungry for her fish flakes!"
Marcus stared at her. Then he burst out laughing. So did his friends.
"Lily," Marcus said, picking up the goldfish bowl, "I'm not a real zombie. I'm pretending! And Goldie isn't hungry — she's dancing because she likes the padel ball bouncing!"
He showed Lily how the goldfish swam faster whenever someone hit the ball.
"Oh," Lily said, feeling her face get warm. "I guess spies can make mistakes too."
"That's okay," Marcus said, setting the goldfish gently back on her table. "Want to learn how to play padel? You can be on my team. Team Goldfish!"
Lily smiled bigger than the pool itself. Some of the best adventures start with a silly mistake.
