The Zombie Who Loved Goldfish

Leo's room was dark except for the glowing moonlight. His mom had just turned off the lights, but Leo couldn't sleep. His zombie doll, Zomboid, sat on the shelf – a green, raggedy toy with one button eye and stitches where his smile should be.

"I wish you were real," Leo whispered.

Suddenly, Zomboid blinked his button eye. "I AM real," the zombie said, his voice like rustling leaves. "And I need your help."

Leo sat up, eyes wide. Zomboid climbed down from the shelf, his stuffed legs moving on their own. "My friend Finny is in trouble. He's a goldfish, and he's stuck in the pond outside."

"Goldfish can't talk," Leo said.

"Finny is a MAGIC goldfish," Zomboid explained. "He grants wishes, but only if you're swimming with him under the full moon. Tonight's the last moon of summer. If we don't reach him by midnight, he'll lose his magic forever."

Leo grabbed his flashlight. "I'm coming too!"

Together they tiptoed downstairs and out the back door. The garden was glowing with fireflies. At the edge of the pond, they saw something shimmering just beneath the water's surface.

"Finny!" Zomboid called.

A beautiful goldfish with scales like tiny stars swam to the surface. "Zomboid! You came!" Finny's voice sounded like bubbles. "But there's no time. I need to grant one last wish before midnight."

Leo was running out of patience. "But you're swimming in the water, and I don't have my swimsuit!"

"You don't need it," said Finny. "Just believe."

Leo stepped into the pond. Instead of getting wet, he felt weightless, like he was floating in space. He began swimming alongside the magical goldfish, while Zomboid floated on the surface like a peculiar green boat.

"What's your wish?" Finny asked Leo.

Leo thought about all the things he could want – toys, adventures, candy. But then he looked at Zomboid, who had saved his friend even though zombies were supposed to be scary. And he looked at Finny, who used his magic to help others.

"I wish for Zomboid to be my real friend forever," Leo said. "Not just a toy, but someone I can have adventures with."

Finny's scales sparkled brighter than ever. "Granted," said the goldfish.

The clock in the distance struck midnight. Finny shimmered and sank into the depths, but not before whispering, "Thank you for choosing friendship."

Leo woke up in his bed the next morning. Had it all been a dream? He looked at his shelf. Zomboid was there, but now the zombie had a tiny golden scale stuck to his stuffed chest, like a heart.

"Ready for tonight's adventure?" Zomboid winked his button eye.

Leo laughed. Some friendships are magic, no matter what they look like.
