The Zombie Who Loved Goldfish

Lily had the messiest hair in school. Every morning, her brown curls stuck out like she'd been struck by lightning. Her mum tried brushing it, braiding it, even putting sparkly clips in it. But Lily's hair had a mind of its own.

One afternoon, Lily was running through the park when she spotted something strange near the pond. A boy stood perfectly still, staring at the water. His arms hung loose at his sides, and he moved in slow, jerky steps.

"Are you okay?" Lily called out.

The boy turned slowly. His eyes looked foggy and faraway. "Must... find... goldfish," he mumbled.

Lily gasped. "You're a zombie!"

The zombie boy nodded sadly. "A wish-making zombie. I was normal until I found this magical pond. A fairy told me if I caught the golden goldfish at midnight, I could wish for anything. But she warned me I'd turn into a zombie until I succeeded."

Lily's curly hair bounced as she knelt beside him. "That's the saddest thing I've ever heard. What will you wish for?"

"To go home and play soccer again," the zombie said. "I've been standing here for three nights. The goldfish is too fast."

Lily held out her hand, palm up. "Let's try together."

All night they waited. The zombie boy taught Lily a secret: if you stay very still and think happy thoughts, fish come closer. So Lily thought about chocolate cake, her dog Buster, and the feeling of jumping into a pile of leaves.

Suddenly, the water sparkled. A beautiful goldfish with scales like tiny suns swam toward them.

"Now!" the zombie whispered.

Lily didn't catch it. Instead, she cupped her hands gently in the water. The goldfish swam right into her palms.

"Make your wish," she told the zombie boy.

He closed his foggy eyes. "I wish... to be free, and for my new friend Lily to always have adventures."

The pond glowed. The zombie boy's face pinked up. He stretched and grinned.

"I'm me again!" he cheered. "I'm Milo!" He looked at Lily's wild curls and laughed. "Your hair is perfect for adventures. Want to play soccer tomorrow?"

Lily smiled so wide her cheeks hurt. She'd made a friend, broken a spell, and learned that even zombies just need someone to believe in them.

From that day on, Lily loved her messy hair. It wasn't just crazy hair anymore. It was adventure hair. And every night, she and Milo visited the golden goldfish, which still swam in the pond, waiting for the next dreamer who needed a little help.
