The Zombie Who Loved Gardens

Lily loved helping her grandmother in the garden. Every Saturday, they would plant seeds, pull weeds, and water the colorful rows of vegetables. But one sunny morning, Lily noticed something strange in the far corner of the garden.

A figure was shuffling slowly between the tomato plants. It had greenish skin, messy hair, and walked like its legs were made of stiff branches. Its arms hung loose at its sides, and it made soft grunting sounds.

"A zombie!" Lily gasped, hiding behind her grandmother's apron.

Grandmother smiled gently. "Oh, that's just Mr. Zuke. He's our garden zombie friend."

"Friend?" Lily peeked out. "But zombies are scary!"

"Not Mr. Zuke," Grandmother whispered. "He's been walking in his sleep for a very long time. He forgot who he was and where he belonged. But I think he's trying to remember."

The zombie stopped near a patch of wilted spinach. He looked at the green leaves with sad, cloudy eyes, then reached out a stiff hand as if wanting to touch them but unable to remember how.

"He looks thirsty," Lily said bravely. "And hungry."

Lily grabbed her watering can and filled it with fresh water from the garden pump. Then she picked a handful of crisp spinach leaves. With grandmother watching proudly, Lily approached the sleepy zombie.

"Mr. Zuke?" she said softly. "Are you hungry?"

The zombie blinked. His cloudy eyes seemed to clear just a little. He nodded—slowly, creakily, like a rusty door opening for the first time in years.

Lily poured water into his cupped hands. Mr. Zuke drank eagerly, and as the cool water touched his lips, something magical happened. The greenish tint faded from his skin. His stiff fingers began to wiggle. Then Lily offered him the spinach.

Mr. Zuke chewed slowly, and with every bite, he changed. The sadness left his eyes. A rosy color returned to his cheeks. His messy hair smoothed itself into neat brown waves. Most wonderful of all, a brilliant smile spread across his face.

"Spinach and water!" Mr. Zuke exclaimed, his voice no longer a grunt but warm and kind. "The magic I needed all along!"

He had been a powerful gardener wizard long ago, but he'd forgotten to care for himself. The simple gifts of water and healthy spinach had broken the sleeping spell.

From that day on, Mr. Zuke became Lily's best garden friend. He taught her magical ways to make plants grow taller and stronger. And Lily learned that even the scariest-looking problems just might need a little kindness, some fresh water, and a good meal to become something wonderful.

"Sometimes," Mr. Zuke would say with a wink, "the most powerful magic comes from the simplest things."
