The Zombie Who Loved Gardens

Lily was a seven-year-old girl who hated spinach more than anything in the world. Every night at dinner, she would hide the green leaves under her napkin when her mom wasn't looking.

One sunny afternoon, Lily sat in her backyard beneath the tall palm tree that swayed in the breeze. In her hands, she held a small glass bowl containing Barnaby, her pet goldfish. Barnaby was no ordinary fish—he had shimmering orange scales that sparkled like tiny stars.

"I wish I didn't have to eat spinach," Lily whispered to Barnaby. She pressed her palms together and closed her eyes tight. "I wish something magical would happen to make vegetables fun."

Suddenly, Barnaby began to glow. His bowl trembled, and a puff of green smoke burst from the water! Lily gasped as the smoke swirled and formed the shape of a person—a green-skinned, friendly-looking zombie wearing overalls and a straw hat!

"Hello!" the zombie said cheerfully. "I'm Zed, and I heard your wish!"

Lily wasn't scared. Zed didn't look scary at all—he had kind eyes and a warm smile. "You're a zombie!" she exclaimed.

"Yes, but I'm a gardening zombie," Zed explained. "I love helping children discover the magic of growing their own food. Would you like to see something wonderful?"

Zed reached into his pocket and pulled out a small orange seed. He planted it in the dirt beside the palm tree. "Watch closely," he said mysteriously.

Within seconds, a tiny orange sprout appeared. It grew taller and taller until it became a beautiful orange tree filled with bright, juicy oranges!

"But wait," Lily said, confused. "I wished about spinach, not oranges."

"Ah," Zed winked, "but I have something special for that, too."

He reached behind the orange tree and revealed a patch of the most beautiful spinach Lily had ever seen. The leaves were shimmering like emeralds, and some even had tiny sparkles.

"This is magical spinach," Zed explained. "When you grow it yourself with love, it tastes like sunshine and rainbows. Would you like to plant some?"

Lily's eyes lit up. She and Zed spent the afternoon planting seeds, watering the soil, and singing silly songs to help the plants grow. Barnaby swam happily in his bowl, watching them.

When dinner came that night, Lily ran to the kitchen. "Mom! Can I help cook dinner tonight? I want to make something special with the vegetables!"

Her mother was surprised but delighted. Together, they made a salad with the magical spinach Zed had helped her plant, along with fresh orange slices from the tree. When Lily took a bite, she couldn't believe how delicious it was!

"Zed was right," Lily whispered to herself. "Growing food with love makes it taste wonderful."

From that day on, Lily became the best gardener in her neighborhood. And sometimes, when she sat beneath the palm tree with Barnaby, she would see a familiar green figure peeking from behind the orange tree, smiling and waving.

Lily learned that sometimes the things we think we hate can become our favorites when we approach them with an open heart and a little bit of magic.
