The Zombie Who Loved Colors
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden. Every day after school, she'd wander through the rows of vegetables and flowers, imagining magical creatures hiding behind every leaf. One sunny afternoon, she noticed something strange moving near the old pumpkin patch.
A small figure shuffled between the orange pumpkins, covered in dirt and leaves. Lily crept closer, her heart beating fast. The figure turned around, and Lily gasped. It was a zombie! But this wasn't like the scary ones in her brother's video games. This zombie had wild grass growing from its head like green hair, and it wore a bright blue pointy hat that seemed much too fancy for such a messy creature.
"Hello?" Lily whispered.
The zombie jumped and looked up with wide, friendly eyes. "Oh! I didn't see you there. I'm Zed!"
Lily blinked. "You're... a zombie who talks?"
"Of course!" Zed said, smiling. "And I love gardens. Look at these beautiful orange pumpkins!" He carefully watered a small sprout with his dirty hands. "I was made from magic garden soil, so plants are my best friends."
Lily sat down beside him. "Can I be your friend too?"
Zed's eyes lit up. "Really? No one's ever wanted to be friends with a zombie before. They usually run away screaming."
"Well, they don't know you like I do," Lily said. She picked up his blue hat, which had fallen off. "You're the nicest zombie I've ever met."
Together, they spent the afternoon planting seeds and watering flowers. Zed taught Lily how to talk to butterflies, and Lily taught Zed how to make flower crowns. When the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Zed adjusted his hat and said, "Thank you, Lily. You taught me something important today."
"What's that?" Lily asked.
"That true friends see with their hearts, not just their eyes," Zed said. "You didn't see a scary zombie. You saw me."
Lily hugged her new friend. "And I'm so glad I did."
Every day after school, Lily returned to the garden. She learned that sometimes the most wonderful friends come in the most unexpected packages — even if they're zombies with grass hair and fancy blue hats who love orange pumpkins.
