The Zombie Who Loved Coconuts

Lila loved running along the beach at sunrise. Her bare feet patted against the warm sand while seagulls called overhead. But this morning, she discovered something extraordinary hiding behind the largest palm tree she had ever seen.

It was green and bumpy, with tangled hair made of dried seaweed. Lila held her breath. Was it the legendary zombie her grandmother whispered about in stories?

"Please don't eat my brain," Lila squeaked, covering her head with her hands.

The creature blinked. It had friendly purple eyes and a crooked smile. "I don't eat brains. I eat coconuts!"

Lila slowly lowered her hands. "You're... a zombie?"

"I'm Zimby," the creature said, scratching his bumpy green head. "Everyone runs away from me because I look scary. But I'm really just lonely."

Lila noticed something shiny clutched in Zimby's seaweed fingers—a beautiful shell necklace. "That's lovely!"

"I made it for a friend," Zimby sighed. "But nobody wants to be friends with a zombie."

Lila thought for a moment. Her grandmother had taught her that true friends see with their hearts, not their eyes. "I'll be your friend, Zimby!"

Zimby's purple eyes twinkled. "Really?"

"Really!" Lila grinned. "Do you want to see my secret cove?"

For weeks, Lila and Zimby played together every morning. They built sandcastles, collected shells, and Zimby taught Lila how to climb the tall palm tree to pick the sweetest coconuts. The other children in the village still whispered about the scary monster, but Lila just smiled.

One day, a terrible storm flooded the village. Everyone was scared and huddled inside their homes. But Zimby wasn't afraid. With his strong green arms, he carried children through the deep water and helped families reach higher ground.

When the storm passed, the village elder approached Zimby. "We were wrong about you. You're not a monster. You're a hero."

Zimby beamed, hugging Lila tight. "I learned something too," he whispered. "Even a zombie can find friends when someone brave enough gives them a chance."

From that day on, nobody ran away from Zimby anymore. And Lila learned that the best friends sometimes come in the most surprising packages.
