The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Ten-year-old Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, he could be found in his backyard, practicing his swing beneath the old orange tree that grew the sweetest fruit in the neighborhood.
One summer evening, as storm clouds gathered overhead, Leo kept hitting his baseball against the wooden fence. *Crack!* The ball soared high, then suddenly—*FLASH!*—a bolt of lightning struck the orange tree, sending sparks flying everywhere.
An orange glow pulsed from the branches, and something tumbled out. It was green-skinned, slightly tattered, with stitches running down its arms. A zombie!
But instead of being scary, this zombie looked nervous. It held up its hands, shaking its head. It wore a tiny cap that said "Z-Ball" on the front.
"You're... you're a zombie!" Leo gasped, clutching his bat.
The zombie nodded, then pointed excitedly at Leo's baseball. It made a motion like swinging a bat, eyes wide with hope.
Leo gasped. "You want to PLAY?"
The zombie grinned, showing not-scary teeth, and did a little happy dance.
Leo's fear melted away. He tossed the ball gently, and the zombie's eyes lit up. With one surprisingly graceful swing, the zombie sent the ball flying—right into the orange tree. Oranges rained down like magical fruit.
"Amazing!" Leo cheered. "I'm Leo. What's your name?"
The zombie pointed to his cap. Zed!
For the next hour, Leo taught Zed how to catch, throw, and run the bases. Zed moved slowly at first, but with each practice, he grew faster and more confident. They laughed together, ate oranges, and Leo realized something important: Zed wasn't scary at all. He was just someone who wanted a friend.
As the sun set, Zed pointed to the orange tree. The magical glow was fading.
"You have to go?" Leo asked sadly.
Zed nodded, but before leaving, he pressed something into Leo's hand—a tiny orange baseball, glowing with the same magic that had brought them together.
"Friends forever?" Leo whispered.
Zed smiled and disappeared into the tree's shimmering light.
Now, whenever Leo plays baseball, he keeps the magical orange ball in his pocket. And sometimes, when the weather's just right, he catches a glimpse of green between the orange tree branches, and he knows Zed is still practicing, waiting for their next game together.
Because sometimes, Leo learned, the most unexpected friends make the best teammates.
