The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Ten-year-old Maya loved playing baseball in her backyard. Her messy brown hair always blew in the wind as she swung her bat. One hot summer afternoon, strange lightning flashed across the blue sky — zap, zap, zap! — and something magical tumbled out of the sky.
It was a tiny pyramid, no bigger than Maya's hand, glowing with purple light. When she picked it up, a little zombie popped out! He wasn't scary at all — just a small green boy with friendly eyes.
"I'm Zed!" he said. "I've been trapped in that pyramid for a thousand years. Will you help me?"
Maya wasn't afraid. "What do you need?"
"I need to learn how to play baseball!" Zed bounced excitedly. "It's the game I've always dreamed about."
Maya laughed. "I can teach you!"
Every day that summer, Zed learned to catch, throw, and hit. His zombie fingers were surprisingly good at gripping the ball. Maya's mom made Zed a special baseball cap to cover his green hair.
But Zed had a secret. The magical lightning that brought him here would return on the last day of summer to take him back to his world.
On that final evening, as lightning flickered on the horizon, Zed handed Maya something special — the tiny pyramid, now warm with magic.
"You gave me the best summer ever," Zed said. "Keep this. Whenever you feel lonely, hold it, and I'll be there in spirit."
Maya watched as lightning swirled around her friend, lifting him into the sky. "Thanks for teaching me that baseball isn't just about winning," she called out. "It's about friendship!"
As Zed disappeared, Maya touched her hair and smiled. She had made the most unlikely friend, and that was the real magic — not lightning or pyramids, but the joy of sharing something you love with someone else.
That night, Maya tucked the glowing pyramid under her pillow, knowing some friendships last forever, even across worlds.
