The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Leo was the smallest boy on his baseball team, but he had the biggest dreams. Every night, he'd practice pitching in his backyard, tossing his baseball again and again. His only fan was Fin, his orange goldfish who swam eagerly in his bowl on the porch, following the ball's movement with wide eyes.
One magical evening, as Leo threw his perfect pitch under the full moon, something amazing happened. The baseball began to glow golden! It sailed through the air and landed in the middle of the backyard, where suddenly - WHOOSH! - a magnificent golden pyramid rose from the grass, sparkling with starlight.
Fin's bowl shimmered, and a tiny voice squeaked, "Step inside, Leo! The pyramid holds a magical baseball game!"
Leo's heart raced as he stepped into the golden pyramid. Inside, toy zombies came alive to play baseball! They were green and bumpy, with stitched-on smiles and button eyes. But these weren't scary zombies - they were friendly and clumsy, tripping over their own feet as they tried to catch the ball.
"I'm Zom," said one zombie, tipping his cap. "We've waited years for someone to play with us!"
The game was hilarious. Zombies tumbled over each other chasing flies, hit the ball with their arms instead of bats, and laughed so hard they'd fall apart - literally! Leo had never had so much fun. He didn't care about winning; he just loved seeing his new friends so happy.
When the magical game ended, Fin appeared, now the size of a real fish, floating beside him. "You can have one wish, Leo!" the goldfish bubbled. "What do you want?"
Leo looked at his zombie friends, who were holding their hats nervously, hoping he'd choose something wonderful.
"I wish," Leo said softly, "that these zombies could be my real friends forever. Not just toys. Real friends who can come play baseball with me every day."
The pyramid glowed brighter than ever. Zom and the other zombies gasped as they became real, with warm green skin and beating hearts. They cheered, tackling Leo in the gentlest group hug ever.
"Thank you, Leo!" Zom said. "You chose friendship, not fame or fortune. That's the best wish of all."
From that night on, Leo's backyard became the most magical place in town. The golden pyramid vanished, but the magic remained. Every evening, Leo, Fin (who could now float in a special bubble), and the zombie friends played baseball until sunset. They never kept score, and the zombie team always won at having the most fun.
Leo learned that the best teammates aren't the strongest or most skilled players - they're the ones who make you laugh, who never give up, and who love the game as much as you do. And sometimes, the most wonderful friends come in the most unexpected packages.
Even if they used to be toys.
