The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Max loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd practice pitching with his golden retriever, Barnaby, who would chase the ball across their backyard with endless enthusiasm. Max dreamed of hitting the perfect home run one day.
One October afternoon, Max's ball sailed over the fence into the old Wilson garden next door. The garden had been overgrown for years, full of towering spinach plants and mysterious shadows. Max climbed the fence, with Barnaby barking encouragement below.
In the middle of the spinach patch stood a figure. Green-skinned and slightly crooked, with messy hair and tattered clothes. A zombie! Max gasped, his heart pounding.
But then something strange happened. The zombie reached into the spinach leaves and pulled out Max's baseball. With surprising gentleness, the zombie tossed the ball back. It was a perfect throw—straight into Max's glove.
"Nice catch," the zombie said, in a voice that sounded like rustling leaves.
Max stepped closer. "You... you're a zombie."
The zombie shrugged. "I prefer 'Garden Guardian.' My name is Zed. I've been tending this spinach for fifty years. It's special spinach, you know. Gives you energy. I used to be a baseball player before I became... like this."
Zed's eyes twinkled like fireflies. "Want to see my secret pitch?"
For the next hour, Max and Barnaby learned Zed's magical baseball techniques. Zed showed them how the spinach leaves could predict wind direction, how to pitch curves that danced like butterflies. They laughed and played until sunset.
"Why haven't I seen you before?" Max asked.
"People usually run away when they see me," Zed said softly. "They don't understand. Just because someone looks different doesn't mean they aren't wonderful."
Max hugged his new friend. "You're my favorite baseball coach ever."
Every day after school, Max returned with Barnaby. They practiced baseball, learned about magical gardening, and discovered that the best friendships bloom in unexpected places—just like Zed's enchanted spinach.
That Halloween, Max dressed as a baseball-playing zombie. When adults asked why, he smiled and told them about his friend Zed, teaching everyone that sometimes the scariest-looking people have the kindest hearts.
