The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, she practiced pitching in her backyard with her orange tabby cat, Pumpkin, chasing after every ball. But today, something magical happened.

A glowing papaya rolled across the grass. Pumpkin's eyes went wide. The papaya shimmered like a rainbow, and when Lily picked it up, it felt warm—like holding a little sun.

"Follow me!" the papaya seemed to hum.

Pumpkin darted toward the woods, and Lily chased after her. They ran until the trees parted, revealing something impossible: a golden pyramid rising from a meadow of sparkling flowers.

"Wow," Lily breathed.

A creaky sound echoed from the pyramid's entrance. Out shuffled a green figure with patchy clothes and stitch marks on his face. A zombie!

Lily wanted to run, but Pumpkin rubbed against the zombie's leg, purring loudly.

"Hello," the zombie said. His voice sounded like dry leaves. "I'm Benny. I've waited三百 years for someone to play baseball with."

Lily blinked. "You like baseball?"

Benny nodded. "My favorite. But I have no one to play with. Everyone runs away."

Lily looked at the papaya in her hands. It glowed brighter.

"We'll play with you!" she said.

For hours, they played. The papaya never broke or spoiled—every time Benny hit it, it sailed through the air like magic. Pumpkin chased it, leaping and twirling. Benny laughed so hard that some of his stitches came loose, revealing more of his friendly smile.

"You're not scary," Lily said.

Benny looked at his patchy hands. "I just wanted a friend."

"We're friends now," Lily said. "And next Saturday, I'll bring my whole team!"

Benny's eyes shone like stars.

As the sun set, the papaya turned into a regular fruit. Benny gifted it to Lily.

"Sometimes," he said, "the scariest things just need someone to give them a chance."

Lily walked home with Pumpkin, her heart full. She couldn't wait for Saturday's game—the first baseball match ever played between a team of kids and a lonely zombie who had waited three centuries just to play.

And every time after that, when Lily ate papaya, she remembered: magic is real, friends come in unexpected packages, and you should never judge someone by how they look.
