The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

In the sleepy town of Willow Creek, where shadows danced like friendly ghosts, there lived a green-skinned zombie named Zeb. Unlike other zombies who moaned and stumbled, Zeb had a secret dream—he loved baseball more than anything in the world.

Every afternoon, Zeb would hide behind the old oak tree near the baseball field, watching the children play. His one good eye would light up as he imagined himself hitting a home run. But Zeb knew he could never join them. Zombies didn't play baseball. Zombies were scary.

One sunny day, a fluffy orange cat named Pumpkin wandered near Zeb's hiding spot. Most cats ran away from zombies, but Pumpkin was curious. She trotted right up to Zeb and rubbed against his leg, purring like a tiny motor.

"You like baseball too?" Pumpkin asked, to Zeb's complete surprise.

Zeb nodded so hard his head wobbled. "More than anything! But look at me—my skin is green, my clothes are tattered, and I can only say 'brains' when I get excited."

Pumpkin sat up tall. "So what? My fur smells like old fish, and I chase my own tail. Nobody's perfect. The important thing is what's in your heart."

The next day, Pumpkin had a plan. When the children's baseball rolled into the woods, Zeb retrieved it with his bouncy zombie walk. The kids gasped at first, but when Zeb handed them the ball and pointed hopefully at the bat, something magical happened.

"Can you play?" a brave girl named Lily asked.

Zeb nodded. Lily tossed him a ball. Zeb's zombie arm flailed wildly—miss! Then—CRACK! The ball soared over the trees like a shooting star. Zeb did a happy zombie dance, arms waving like spaghetti.

"That was amazing!" shouted the children. "You're on our team!"

From that day on, Zeb became the best first baseman Willow Creek had ever seen. His zombie reflexes were perfect for catching fly balls. Pumpkin became the team mascot, sitting on Zeb's shoulder during games.

Zeb learned that being different didn't mean he couldn't belong. And the children learned that friends come in all shapes, sizes, and shades of green. Sometimes the best teammates are the ones you least expect—especially when they have a wise cat to show them the way.
