The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Tommy loved his messy brown hair that stuck up in every direction. He also loved baseball, and he especially loved his dog, Barnaby—a golden retriever with the softest fur in the whole world.

One sunny afternoon, Tommy was playing catch in his backyard when something strange happened. A bright orange ball rolled out from under the porch. But it wasn't a baseball. It glowed!

When Tommy picked it up, the ground started to rumble. Up from the dirt crawled a zombie—but not a scary one. This zombie had green skin, purple hair, and the biggest, kindest smile Tommy had ever seen.

"Hello!" said the zombie. "I'm Zed. Is this your orange?"

Tommy nodded, too surprised to speak.

"I was playing baseball underground," Zed explained, "and I hit my magical orange ball too hard! It popped right up here!"

Barnaby wagged his tail and licked Zed's hand. The zombie giggled.

"Would you like to play?" Tommy asked, finding his voice.

Zed's eyes lit up. "Yes! But I need a teammate. It's been so lonely down there."

Tommy smiled. "Barnaby can play outfield! He's excellent at catching."

And so they played—the most wonderful game of baseball ever. Zed wasn't scary at all. He was just someone who needed a friend. When the sun began to set, Zed had to go back underground.

"Thank you," Zed said, handing Tommy a small orange marble. "If you ever want to play again, just roll this on the ground."

Tommy waved goodbye, his hair messier than ever from running. He learned something important that day: things that seem different or strange might just be friends you haven't met yet.

That night, Tommy dreamed of baseball games under the earth, magical oranges, and a zombie with purple hair who became his best friend.
