The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Ten-year-old Leo sat on his front porch, tossing his baseball up and down. His golden retriever, Buster, watched with big brown eyes, hoping Leo would throw the ball instead.
"Sorry buddy," Leo said. "Nobody wants to play with me today."
That's when he saw it shambling down the street—a greenish figure with stiff arms and messy hair. A zombie! But this zombie wore a dusty baseball cap and stared longingly at Leo's ball.
Leo's heart raced, but something made him pause. This zombie didn't look hungry for brains. It looked hungry for... fun?
"Hey!" Leo called out. "You like baseball?"
The zombie nodded enthusiastically.
Leo's neighbor, grumpy Mr. Henderson, charged out of his house. "That's no ordinary zombie, kid! That's Zombear—the most fearsome zombie bear in magical baseball history!"
The creature groaned, and Leo somehow understood. It wasn't a zombie bear at all. It was Barry, a regular zombie who LOVED baseball but never got asked to play.
Leo's grandpa appeared with his old storybook. "Barry was the best player ever, until a grumpy bull named Blackie charged the field and chased everyone away. Poor Barry was so lonely, he turned into a zombie from sadness."
Leo looked at his dog, who was already wagging his tail at Barry. "Hey Barry! Want to play catch?"
Barry's green face lit up. He threw the ball higher than any human could! Buster chased it, barking joyfully. Even grumpy Mr. Henderson smiled from his porch.
They played until sunset. Leo learned that sometimes the scariest things just need a friend. And Barry? He wasn't a zombie anymore—he was just Barry, the happiest baseball player in town.
That night, Leo tucked his baseball under his pillow, wondering what other adventures awaited. Buster curled up beside him, and Leo knew that kindness could work magic better than any spell.
