The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Leo was sitting in his backyard, staring at the bright orange baseball his grandpa had given him. He sighed. None of his friends wanted to play. They were all scared of the old house next door, where everyone said a zombie lived.

"There's no such thing as zombies," Leo whispered, tossing the orange baseball up and catching it.

Suddenly, something green and wobbly peeked over the fence. It was a zombie! But not a scary one. This zombie had moss for hair, flowers growing from his pockets, and the friendliest smile Leo had ever seen.

"I heard 'baseball,'" the zombie said, his voice sounding like crunching autumn leaves. "I LOVE baseball! I'm Zimby."

Leo's eyes widened. "You're... real?"

"As real as spinach makes me," Zimby grinned, pulling a bag of fresh spinach from his pocket. "Want to play? This spinach gives me super energy!"

Zimby showed Leo how the magical spinach made him faster and stronger. They played baseball all afternoon—Zimby hit the orange baseball so far it soared over three houses! Leo had never laughed so hard. Zimby wasn't scary at all. He was just lonely, and the "zombie" stories had kept everyone away.

"Tomorrow," Zimby said carefully, "bring your friends. But tell them... sometimes the things we think are scary are just waiting for someone to say hello."

The next day, Leo brought his whole team. They were nervous at first, but when Zimby hit a home run while juggling spinach leaves, everyone cheered. They played until sunset, the orange baseball glowing like a tiny sun.

That summer, Leo learned that bravery isn't fighting monsters—it's giving them a chance to be friends. And sometimes, the most magical things come from the places we're afraid to look.

Oh, and Leo started eating spinach. His grandpa said that was the real magic all along.
