The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Lily was the best baseball player in her neighborhood. Every afternoon, she'd grab her favorite glove and meet her best friend Max at the park. They'd play catch until the streetlights flickered on, dreaming of becoming famous players someday.
But everything changed when Max moved away. Lily felt lonely swinging the bat all by herself. Her parents surprised her with something special — a fluffy golden puppy named Buster.
"He's not just a dog," her dad winked. "Buster has a nose for adventure."
Lily soon discovered her dad was right! One moonlit evening, Buster pulled her toward the old abandoned baseball field at the edge of town. That's when she saw him — a greenish figure shuffling near home plate.
"A zombie!" Lily gasped, clutching Buster's fur.
But instead of being scary, the zombie just looked... sad. He held a tattered old baseball mitt and dropped a ball, then picked it up again, over and over.
"I think he needs a friend," Lily whispered. Buster wagged his tail in agreement.
Lily stepped forward. "Hi! I'm Lily. Do you want to play catch?"
The zombie's face lit up. He nodded enthusiastically! His name was Zed, and he'd been the field's guardian for fifty years, missing the game he loved so much. Every night, Zed practiced alone, hoping someone would finally notice him.
That began the most wonderful summer ever. Lily became a secret spy of sorts — sneaking out at dusk to play baseball with her new friend. Zed taught her amazing tricks: catching fly balls with one hand, pitching curves that made Buster spin in circles trying to catch them.
One evening, Zed revealed a secret. He held out his mitt, which glowed with shimmering light. Inside was the most beautiful baseball anyone had ever seen — it sparkled like stars!
"This is the Dream Ball," Zed explained. "It makes every child who plays baseball believe in themselves. But it only works when you share it with friends."
Lily knew exactly what to do. The next day, she invited all the neighborhood kids to the field. When they arrived, Zed wasn't scary at all — he was just Zed, the baseball-loving zombie who became their team's best coach.
Every full moon, they still gather at the old field. Buster barks happily as Zed pitches the Dream Ball, and every child who plays leaves believing a little more in magic, friendship, and the power of never giving up on your dreams.
Because sometimes, Lily learned, the scariest-looking things are just friends waiting to be found.
