The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Lily loved playing baseball in her backyard. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her favorite glove and practice pitching. The baseball would sail through the air, and she'd imagine she was a star player in the World Series.

One hot afternoon, Lily threw her baseball extra hard. It flew over the fence and landed near the old pond behind her house. The pond had magical water that shimmered with rainbow colors when the sun hit it just right.

When Lily went to retrieve her baseball, she saw someone strange standing by the water's edge. It was a zombie!

But this zombie wasn't like the scary ones in movies. He had green skin and messy clothes, but he was holding Lily's baseball gently. His name was Zed, and he had the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen.

"I found your baseball," Zed said, his voice sounding like autumn leaves crunching. "I was just admiring how perfectly round it is."

Lily was surprised. "You like baseball?"

"I love baseball!" Zed's face lit up. "I used to play when I was alive, but that was a long time ago. Nobody wants to play with a zombie."

Lily felt sad for Zed. "I'll play with you!" she said. "But first, let's make sure the magical water doesn't make you too slippery."

They played catch until the sun began to set. Zed was amazing at baseball! He could throw the ball so far it almost disappeared into the clouds. Lily taught him how to bat, and Zed taught her how to catch with two hands.

"You're my best friend, Zed," Lily said as they sat by the magical water, watching the sunset make ripples of orange and pink.

"And you're mine, Lily," Zed smiled. "Thank you for not being afraid of me."

That day, Lily learned that sometimes the scariest-looking people can be the kindest friends. And Zed learned that even a zombie can find friendship in the most unexpected places.

From then on, every afternoon, Lily and Zed played baseball together by the magical water. And sometimes, if you looked closely, you could see the baseball glowing with a little bit of magic from the water.
