The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Leo stared at the old plastic zombie toy floating in his inflatable pool. The green figure bobbed in the warm water, its painted grin seeming almost real under the summer sun.

"I wish you could really play," Leo whispered, splashing water with his toes.

That's when the magic happened. The pool began to glow, and suddenly the zombie sat up! Water dripped from his plastic skin as he stretched his arms.

"Is this a baseball field?" the zombie asked, his voice sounding like bubbles popping.

Leo's eyes widened. "You're alive! And yes, I have a baseball mitt!"

The zombie, whose name was Zed, climbed out of the pool. He wasn't scary at all—he just wanted to play! But Zed moved a bit slowly, his plastic joints still stiff from years in the toy box.

"I'll teach you!" Leo said generously. "Baseball is about fun, not just winning."

They played until the sun began to set. Zed's slow movements became his special advantage—he could predict where the ball would go because he took his time. By the time the moon rose, Zed had hit three home runs!

"You're the best baseball player ever!" Leo cheered.

Zed smiled his painted grin. "And you taught me something too, Leo. Sometimes the ones everyone thinks are scary just need a friend to show them how to play."

As the pool's magic faded, Zed grew still again, becoming a plastic toy. But Leo knew his friend would return. Every day after school, he ran to the pool, ready for another game of baseball with the zombie who had taught him that everyone deserves a chance to play.

The water shimmered with leftover magic, and Leo knew this summer would be full of wonders—especially his unlikely friendship with a zombie who loved baseball as much as he did.
