The Zombie Who Loved Baseball
Max loved summer days. The sun shone bright, the air smelled like freshly cut grass, and best of all — he could play baseball with his best friend Sophie in the backyard.
"One more hit!" Sophie called, pitching the ball perfectly.
Max swung his bat with all his might. *CRACK!* The baseball soared through the air, over the fence, and landed with a splash in old Mr. Higgins' swimming pool.
"Oh no!" Max gasped. "That was my favorite baseball!"
The children crept to the pool's edge. The water rippled, and suddenly, something strange began to emerge. A greenish figure rose from the water, dripping wet, holding the baseball.
"Is that... a zombie?" Sophie whispered, hiding behind Max.
But this zombie wasn't like the ones in scary movies. His hair was made of seaweed, his skin shimmered with pool water sparkles, and he wore a friendly smile.
"You play beautifully!" the zombie said, his voice sounding like gentle ocean waves. "I'm Zed. I've been sleeping in this pool for fifty years, waiting for someone to bring baseball back to my garden."
"You like baseball?" Max asked, amazed.
Zed's eyes twinkled. "I was the greatest pitcher in 1973. Then I fell asleep during a pool party and never woke up... until now."
"Play with us!" Sophie said bravely.
All afternoon, Zed taught them magical tricks. He could make baseballs curve like rainbows and throw pitches that sang soft melodies. In return, Max and Sophie showed Zed how much fun the world had become while he slept.
"I should thank you," Zed said as the sun began to set. "You woke me up with something wonderful. Friendship and fun are more powerful than any sleeping spell."
He handed Max a magical baseball. "Keep this. Whenever you throw it, remember that magic lives in unexpected places — even in a pool, even with a zombie, especially with friends."
Max and Sophie ran home, already planning tomorrow's game. They had discovered something amazing: the world is full of surprises, and sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just want to play baseball.
That night, Max dreamed of underwater stadiums, where zombie pitchers threw magical baseballs that made everyone smile.
