The Zombie Who Loved Baseball

Maya stood at the edge of the swimming pool, her toes curled against the warm concrete. The full moon floated above like a giant papaya slice in the dark sky.

"You coming in?" her best friend Carlos called, splashing happily.

"Not yet," Maya whispered. "Tonight's the night."

Every kid in the neighborhood knew the legend: at midnight, the pool zombie appeared. Maya had never believed in monsters, but something magical called to her tonight.

The clock in the clubhouse chimed twelve times. Ripples appeared in the center of the pool, though the air was still.

Then HE rose.

Greenish skin, seaweed hair, eyes that glowed like fireflies. But instead of scary moans, the zombie spoke in a bubbly voice.

"Anyone want to play catch?" And he pulled a soggy baseball from behind his ear.

Maya gasped. "You're not scary!"

"I'm Barnaby," the zombie said, grinning. "I've lived in this pool for fifty years. The scary stories? I started those myself. Keeps the noisy kids away during my nap time." He tossed the baseball perfectly to Carlos.

"Why do you live in a pool?" Maya asked, enchanted.

Barnaby's smile faded. "I lost my home papaya orchard long ago. This pool reminds me of swimming in the river beside my trees. I miss the sweet fruit."

Maya's eyes widened. "My grandmother grows papayas! She has a whole orchard!"

The next morning, Maya led Barnaby (hidden under a beach umbrella and oversized sunglasses) to her grandmother's backyard. When Barnaby bit into a fresh papaya, tears streamed down his green face.

"Just like I remember," he whispered.

From that night on, Barnaby had a new home. Not in the pool, but in a beautiful guest house near the papaya orchard. And every full moon, Maya, Carlos, and Barnaby played baseball until the stars came out.

Maya learned that sometimes the scariest things are just lonely, and kindness can turn monsters into best friends.
